Dark Angels champion
This mini was more of an experiment rather than something to paint and sell, I wanted to have a go at painting a dark angels marine as I have never done one before (be gentle as its my first one!) as well as try to cut down on my habit of ruining a well blended model with loads of over the top high lights like on my ahriman model where you cant quite make out blending due to the harsh high lights. The reason there is no light reflection on any of the mini or base from the fire FX is because it was painted in three pieces, first the body then the backpack and finally the arm with the flame pistol which I find this technique a lot easier in the long run. When I finished painting the body I was looking at an article by victoria on “painting lighting effects” and seeing her “elder exarch” on page three and decided to give my dark angel a flame fetcher but I did not want to paint the light reflection on the armour because of existing high lights and that I might ruin it, as for the base I left that as well as it would look odd that the base has light reflection and the model had non. I would love to try victorias tips on another chaos sorcerer I have converted for light reflection from the power sword, which will be blended up to bright green with a dark tone colour to the armour and robe like her necron immortal (thanks for the tip as it will come in handy in years to come!) Another important thing about the fire id like to make clear is that to anyone who looks at a first glance would think the flame would look unrealistic because of its shape? Well a few years ago I was looking in a world record book and under the longest flame from a home made flame-thrower was a picture of “Ripply” from the film Aliens in the middle of field firing this thing! But back to the point the flame was more of a long slick burst that didn’t look like it would stop rather than a slow flickering flame that seamed to look as if it’s coming out of an aerosol can! (Don’t try this at home kid’s!!!) The point is I was trying to make it as realistic as possible and hope I’ve hit the tip of the ice berg! As for your comment about the fire this was made more for display rather than gaming! Thank you for reading and hope I’ve shed some light on the method of my painting and for any one learning this lighting technique I suggest reading victorias article!
