And usually with the right arm free - as left handed people were regarded with suspicion... Which is why SINISTER derives from Sinistral - left handed.
A friend of mine pointed out to me, that a tower's staircase should wind so that the defender would have his shield arm to the wall, and his sword arm free. I had never thought of it before, but it made all of the sense in the world.
